Important Breakthrough in Precision Glass Production in Iran
The Inauguration Day of Sina Glass Company (SGC), a manufacturer of neutral glass tubing, took place at its factory located on Qazvin on 15th December 2006 and was attended by the Governor of Qazvin and other government officials.
The neutral glass tubes are used to produce pharmaceutical injection glass (ampoules, vials and dental cartridges) and it is vital that they are chemically neutral because if the contents react with the glass the results to the patient can be fatal. Due to this requirement manufacturing neutral glass is a complex process and the technical know-how to achieve such high standards is known only to a select few.
Today there are only four major manufacturers of neutral glass tubes which are located in four countries: USA, Germany, Japan and Italy. SGC is now the 5th manufacturer who has been able to acquire the technology to produce neutral glass.
The specialized neutral glass is produced in the form of a tube and the glass tubes are supplied to many glass manufacturers in the world who use these tubes to produce ampoules, vials and dental cartridges which are mainly used for medicine injections.
The founder of pharmaceutical glass companies in Iran, Dr. Ali Sattaripour, initially established Daru Shishe Company in Iran 20 years ago to produce ampoules, vials and cartridges from glass tubes (imported from abroad). This production started with 3 lines with a production capacity of 60 million ampoules a year and then expanded over the years to have over 40 production lines to become one of the major producers of pharmaceutical glass countries in the world with an annual production of over 800 million ampoules, vials and dental cartridges.
Today an important part of Daru Shishe's production is exported to many countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and South America and Daru Shishe was awarded by the an accolade by the Ministry of Commerce as one of the "Best Exporters of the Year 1385".
For its production, Daru Shishe had to purchase the specialized glass tubes form the four major manufactures in the world which are also the main manufacturers of ampoules, vials and cartridges. When Daru Shishe's export turnover expanded it was no longer possible to buy glass tube from its multinational competitors with acceptable pricing. These competitors are: Witton USA, Schott Glass Germany, NEG (NEC) Japan and Kimble Italy. There was no way Daru Shishe would survive with its vast export market unless they could find a way to produce the specialized glass tubes. However, after several years of research and development the challenges and efforts of the hard working Iranian engineers and technical professionals finally resulted in acquiring the necessary know-how for producing neutral glass.
Today SGC (also founded by Dr. Ali Sattaripour) has started neutral glass production with one furnace to produce about 5000 metric tons a year, which is mostly for local consumption and only 20 percent of the capacity is for export. To further support the export market the current capacity must expand for support the present production capacity of Daru Shishe and its expansion programs.
More than 800 Billion Rials (equivalent to approx 80 million US Dollars) has already been invested in Daru Shishe and SGC (both part of Sina Glass Companies) and for their expansion programs they will need over 100 million Euro and both companies are now seeking local or foreign investment for their expansion.
SGC of Iran has become the 5th manufacturer to presses this technology and know-how.
However, this is only the first step and further research and development is needed to carry on this work to achieve a position to compete seriously with its multinational competitors. Having the know-how and with access to low energy costs, low costs of local raw materials and relatively low labour costs, SGC is well placed to exploit the exciting opportunities that exist throughout the worldwide market.
